WORKSHOPS for WEST COAST WILDERNESS FIBRE ARTS at TULLAH LAKESIDE LODGE February 17th 18th 19th
The keynote tutor is Sue Evans a prize-winning Feltmaker at the Australian Sheep and Wool Show at Bendigo. Sue plans to have a ‘rolling workshop’ from the Friday evening to Sunday late morning. She is presenting “The Colours of Tullah”, a Menu of Basic Felting Techniques, Nuno Felting, Resist Felting and Needle Felting.
MATERIALS TO BRING: Wool Tops, fleece, yarns, threads, bubble wrap & netting(approx 1x1 mt.), scissors, needles, pins etc. scraps of tissue silk, muslin, open lace etc. embellishments, imagination and inspiration to experiment. Kits of mixed materials - approx $10. If you wish you can create a “tex-TILE”, an A4 page size piece of art work, constructed from felt (and embellishments) suitable for sale at the end of the textile weekend, toward the next, 2014 West Coast Wilderness Fibre Arts at Tullah.
Yoka Douglas will present the Workshop “Exploring Colour” which will lead us into the language of colour and how we make it work for us. What it is, how it affects us, how colour and its mixing works, and how we apply this information to benefit our purpose.
ITEMS TO BRING: Note book and pen. Kits will be available
Dean Rivett and Irene Hall will be presenting a Lace Knitting Workshop in which you will learn Lace Cast-ons, Increasing/decreasing, Reading a Chart, Lace Borders.
MATERIALS TO BRING: Knitting Needles size 6 (4mm) Crochet hook, Fine yarn small quantities - 1 or 2 ply. You will take home Knitted Lace Samples.
Jen Eddington is planning an opportunity to explore the flora for dye materials that abound in the beautiful Tullah area with a series of dye-pots and mordants for experimental quantities in her Workshops on “Natural Dyes” and also on “Bundle Dyeing”.
1. Please note: All fibres/fabrics must be pre-washed and must be natural fibres and if possible, pre mordanted with alum.
2. Also to ensure that everyone is able to dye fibre, a limit of 2mt.per person unless there is extra room.
ITEMS AND MATERIALS TO BRING:
“Natural Dyeing.” Note book and pen. Natural fabric (as outlined above), 2oz samples of hand spun or commercial undyed yarn or threads. Should you wish to use resists, please bring your own. Gloves and facemask, sturdy shoes and clothes that will get dirty, plastic bags to take home results as they may not be dry. Something to attach to your sample fabric or yarn, which can withstand heating and identifies it as yours, as once it goes into the dye-pot it gets a bit confusing.
“Bundle Dyeing” It is hoped to take a walk in the wonderful surroundings and collect materials which will be bundled in natural fibre cloth with a variety of mordant options and steamed.
MATERIALS TO BRING: Note book and pen. Quantity of fibre- silk, cotton, wool. You will also need to bring string or wool to tie the bundles. Bags to collect treasures on the walk.
Identifying attachment, as in Natural Dyeing above. Plastic bags to take home steamed bundles. As the bundles need to be left wrapped for a few days they will be undone after you get home and the results will be a great surprise. This will give you a true treasure of your time in Tullah.
*Some fabrics and fibres will be available from Jen. Limit of 12 persons for the 2 hour workshop. Small charge of $5 to offset cost of mordants and gas.
WE ARE STILL HOPING THAT SOMEONE WOULD BE PREPARED TO PRESENT A WORKSHOP IN “BULKY SPINNING ON JUMBO FLYERS FOR RUG WEAVING” At this stage we have no one to share these skills
if anyone is interested in doing so, please contact Stratie

If you plan to visit the beautiful West Coast of Tasmania, from the evening of the 17th to 18th and 19th February, 2012 the Wild West Coast Branch of the Hand Weavers, Spinning and Dyeing Guild of Tasmania Inc. is planning the West Coast Wilderness Fibre Arts Weekend at Tullah Lakeside Lodge situated on the shore of Lake Rosebery, looking out over a rainforest with an ambience of sheer tranquillity. The Lodge has a Restaurant and Bar and there is quite a deal of parking space for self-contained Vans and Campers.
We will sit and spin, do felting, fibre dyeing, conduct workshops, knit or crochet and have our portable looms working. As usual, we will have Show and Tell from many talented participants. We have male, as well as female Members, so all are welcome.
Should you feel musically inclined, this is a spot to inspire you, so please do bring your musical instruments. Sit and sip a “cuppa” beside the Lake under the Gumtrees. Before Dinner Saturday evening, the “Tullah Bullfrogs’ will sing for us.
For those not doing any of the above or who wish to stay for a few days then there is Kayaking, Fishing, Wilderness Gallery, Lyn’s Bears, and for the train buffs, “Wee Georgie Wood”, as well as bush walks, the Dams, also the Rosebery Festival 10km away. There is a small entrance cost for Day Visitors, and we would love to share this event with you.
We are planning to host this event every “even” year, commencing in 2012.
