St Distaff's Day 2023
The Distaff or Roc used in spinning was the medieval symbol of women's work. St Distaff’s Day (also known as Roc Day) was the day when women returned to their traditional work after Christmas. Men returned to work on a different day, and this was celebrated as Plough Day!

About the Event
According to the website "The Daily Mass.com", after the 12 days of Christmas, on the 13th day women returned to their housework, usually 'picking up' their spindles. The distaff held the unspun wool, with spinning being the major chore of women, and especially of the eldest female child - the 'spinster' of the family, who from the age of 4 years, had to spin to clothe the whole family before herself.
January 7th 2023 is St Distaff's Day.
Come and join us on the Green in Westbury to celebrate. This is an informal day – you turn up with your spinning wheel or spindle and food and drink and have a lovely day with a picnic atmosphere, and there is plenty of shade under those beautiful trees if you need it.
