On January 7, the Southern members of the HWSG celebrated Distaff Day 7th January 2025 under a perfect blue-sky day, accompanied by a SSE breeze and freshly mown grass at Cornelian Bay Park.
Historically, Herrick's poem (1648) reports a fun day of pranks and banter between the men and women, when women take up their Distaff after the 12 days holiday of Christmas.
Men return to work on Plough Monday which is around the same time.
Today, wheels and spindles were dusted down and used to spin hemp, cotton, wool and

alpaca.
Summer fruit and stories were shared while the curious public stood to watch members spin and marvel at woven creations by members.
